In 1830, President Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act to remove 5 tribes from the southeast to land out west.  The Cherokee sued in court and won but Jackson still forced the Native Americans off the land.  This movement is what came to be called the "Trail of Tears".  Notice how where the indians were moved to coincides with the map on the population tab.
